Nebraska-Kearney, Chadron State, York College, Midland, and Nebraska Wesleyan all started there seasons this weekend. UNK and Chadron State went west and competed in the Cowboy Open in Laramie, Wyoming. Midland and York competed at the Jamestown Open in North Dakota. Nebraska Wesleyan competed at the Yellowjacket Open in Rochester Minnesota.

York and Midland started action Friday night with duals. York went 2-1 with a 42-12 win over Midland, 41-9 win over Wayne State, and fell to Jamestown 42-7. Midland was 0-2 on Friday with losses to York and a 48-3 loss to Jamestown.

At the Jamestown open, York had two place winners. Freshman John Fox from Gilroy, California won first place in the 141 pound weight class. Sophomore Marce Vasquez from Bridgeport, Nebraska finished in eighth place. For Midland, they had two placers as well. Tristan Snover from Seward finished in sixth overall, while Dylan Buschow from Blue Hill finished in fifth. The Jamestown Open also had plenty of Nebraska flavor, with representatives from other schools at the Open. James Burks (Northern State/Burke) finished in first at 157 pounds. At 141 pounds, Creighton Baughman (Northern State/Papio) finished in third, Trevor Fauver (Mary/Gretna) finished in fifth. Jack Huffman (Augstana/Millard West) finished runner up at 133 pounds. Caden Moore (Northern State/O’Neill) finished in fifth at 149 pounds. Josh Trumble (Northern State/Millard South) finished in fourth at 184 pounds. Cole Huss (Northern State/Gretna) finished in fifth at 174 pounds. Nathan Rodriguez (Northern State/Millard South) finished in eighth at 141 pounds.

Chadron State and Nebraska-Kearney battled in the tough Cowboy Open at Wyoming University Saturday. In the Elite division Nebraska Kearney saw place winners from Josh Portillo, who finished in third at 125 and Jacob Wasser, who finished in fourth at 157 pounds. In the Amateur division Kearney had three place winners, Jackson Nielsen from Blair who finished third at 125. Nick James from Kearney also finished third at 141 pounds. Wyatt Hayes finished in fourth at 174 pounds. Omaha Skutt graduate Billy Higgins finished as runner up in the elite division at 174 pounds. He is wrestling at Northern Colorado.

Nebraska Wesleyan was the lone Nebraska school competing at the Yellowjacket open. Tyler Laudick finished in eighth at 125 pounds. At 133 pounds, Wesleyan had two place winners. Eron Haynes from Central won the weight class. UNK transfer Van Schmidt from Gretna finished in third for Wesleyan. Rounding out the place winners for Wesleyan was Zeth Gerkensmeyer from Columbus Lakeview,who finished in a tie for seventh.

Most of the Nebraska programs will return to action this week. Thursday Nebraska hosts the Nebraska Duals. Nebraska will Dual UNK and Chadron State. UNK will dual Nebraska and Hastings College. Chadron State will Dual Nebraska and Hastings College. York, Hastings, and Nebraska Wesleyan will then be off this weekend.

Saturday, Doane and Midland will be at the Dan Harris Open in Kansas. Concordia and UNK will be at the Dakota Wesleyan Open. Nebraska will be at the Journeyman Classic. Chadron State will have a dual at Northern Colorado on Sunday.
