NSWCA Girls State Tournament Preview

Preview

NSWCA will be hosting the 2nd annual Girls State Wrestling Tournament in York this Friday and Saturday. 64 teams will be represented by 178 participants. Defending State Champion West Point Beemer will look to defend their state team title from a year ago. Defending the state title became a lot tougher for West Point Beemer when they lost the services 103 Ichell Rivas earlier this week. That opened the door wide open for South Sioux City to win the team title. After South Sioux City West Point Beemer will need to fend off Schuyler Amherst and Pierce.

Projected Team Champion: South Sioux City

Top Half:

Flavia Nagatani (Kearney) is a returning state champion and should be a favorite to win the whole thing. Nagatani doesn’t have any competition in the girls tournaments this year as she is the varsity 106 for Kearney High. It looks like Gina Gonzales (SSC) will be her toughest competition on the top half.

Bottom Half:

This half of the bracket looks to be a little more open as Ichell Rivas (WPB) won’t be competing this weekend. Riley Hohn (Weeping Water) and Afftyn Stusse (Battle Creek) look to be the semifinal favorites here, with Stusse being the favorite to reach the finals. Don’t count out Brianna Miller (Platteview) on this half either as she has been wrestling really well as of late.

Finals Prediction:

Flavia Nagatani (Kearney) over Afftyn Stusse (Battle Creek)

Top Half:

This side looks like a Corah Linnaus (Stanton) vs Brisa Figueroa (WBP). Linnaus has a common opponent win over Figuerao, so we will give her the nod to reach the finals and be the predicted champion with head to head wins over Bleich and Wilson.

Bottom Half:

This looks like a Tayce Bleich (Battle Creek) vs Raelyn Wilson (Weeping Water) semifinal match. They haven’t met yet this year and should be in for a great battle. Michaela Bivainis (Amherst) is a name to watch here was well. She wrestled most of the year at 103 before bumping up to 109.

Finals Prediction:

Corah Linnaus (Stanton) over Raelyn Wilson (Weeping Water)

Top Half:

Diana Cervantes (WPB) is the top seed coming in. There are some questions surrounding her health coming in as she defaulted out of the tournament last week after losing to projected quarterfinals opponent Maddy Pineda (Schuyler). Whoever wins that match will likely get Taleah Thomas (Amherst) in the semifinals. Thomas suffered her first loss of the season to Arnold last week.

Bottom Half:

Callie Arnold (Pierce) was beat Lily Gomez (RCBH) earlier this season and got caught in a headlock. That looks to be the semifinals match on this side. Arnold made the late season drop to 117 and has looked really good. Her win over Thomas last week is good enough to make here the projected champion.

Finals Prediction:

Callie Arnold (Pierce) over Taleah Thomas (Amherst)

Top Half:

Kristen Schellenberg (Scribner-Snyder) looks to match up with Brooklin Kuester (WPB) in the semifinals. Schellenberg already has a head to head win over Kuester, which makes her the favorite to meet projected finalist Rosseter who she beat last week in the Weeping Water finals. Get your popcorn as that will be one of the best finals you will see.

Bottom Half:

It has already been alluded to, but Reagan Rosseter (Westside) is the projected finalist. The only trouble between her and a rematch with Schellenberg is Selena Zamora (SSC). Rosseter has already beat Zamora this season and it will probably happen again.

Finals Prediction

Reagan Rosseter (Westside) over Kristen Schellenberg (Scribner-Snyder)

Top Half:

Top Seeded Reagen Gallaway (Amherst) is in a league over her own at this weight where she was a State Champion last season. She is maybe the best pound for pound girl in the state as she has dominated everyone, she has faced this season. Her likely semifinals opponent is either Carly Wemhoff (Schuyler) or Pacie Lee (Nebraska City).

Bottom Half

The wildcard is how healthy is Maggie Painter (Pierce). She has missed most of the season with an injury and seen her first action of the season last weekend at Weeping Water where she wrestled 142. Painter should get Alekxa Olvera (Schuyler) in the quarterfinals. If she can win that she would get Pheonix Jensen (Platteview) in the semifinals. Jensen has already lost to Gallaway multiple times this season and will be hoping for another shot, but Painter might be just healthy enough to make a Cinderella run!!

Finals Prediction:

Reagen Gallaway (Amherst) over Maggie Painter (Pierce)

142

Top Half:

Yohaly Quinones (SSC) has been dominate all year long and is the favorite to reach the finals. Her semifinals opponent looks like it will most likely be Taylor Roach (Amherst). Roach will need to get through Mila Pozehl (Ainsworth) to reach the semifinals.

Bottom Half:

Kayla Jeffery (Plattsview) and Saige Miserez (WPB) look to be the best two wrestlers on the bottom side. Miserez has a couple wins over Jeffery this season, but Jeffery has been wrestling much better as of late.

Finals Prediction

Yohly Quinones (SSC) over Saige Miserez (WPB)

Top Half:

Evelyn Guzman (Schuyler) is the favorite to reach the finals. Guzamn has wins over both Jacquely Zamora (SSC) and Casidy Wortman (Creighton) this season. Daysha Jones (Louisville) vs Twanie Escamilla (Fremont) looks to be a great R16 match as they have split matches this year.

Bottom Half:

Ally Micheel (Twin Loup) and Haylee Miller (Wisner-Pilger) should be a great semifinals match. A slight nod goes to Micheel being the one to reach the finals as a defending state champion. Tiffany Senff (Axtell) is a little bit of an unknown here. A lot of her matches have been against boys this year.

Finals Prediction

Evelyn Guzman (Schuyler) over Ally Micheel (Twin Loup)

Top Half:

Aridiana Zamora (SSC) is the favorite to reach the finals. She will likely draw either GiaVonni Blanks (Bellevue West) or Lila Bloomer (South Loup). Zamora has a win over Bloomer. Blommer again is a little bit of an unknown as she doesn’t have many matches against girls competition.

Bottom Half:

This side looks to have a semifinal match between Kaylee Ricketts (Wahoo) and Makinzie Parsons (Pierce). They haven’t met this season, but Ricketts has yet to lose a match in girls competition this season. Parsons only loses are to Zamora which so make for a great semifinals match pending they both get there.

Finals Prediction:

Aridiana Zamora (SSC) over Kaylee Ricketts (Wahoo)

Emma Gomez (Hemingford) over Clarie Paasch (WPB)

Top Half:

Defending State Champion Zeriah George (Winnebago) will look to defend her crown this weekend. She should see Yadira Morales (Schuyler) in the semifinals. Morales opens up with Destiny Damme (Amherst) in the quarterfinals who she has a pair of wins over this season.

Bottom Half:

Marcella Limon (SSC) and Madison Martinez (Fremont) have already both reached the semifinals as Nayeli Diaz (Paxton) is going to be unable to compete. This should be a great match but Martinez is the favorite to reach the Finals.

Finals Prediction:

Zeriah George (Winnebago) over Madison Martinez (Fremont)
