The Huskers opened their season at the Warren Williamson/Daktronics Open hosted by South Dakota State University. Mikey Labriola led the charge by winning the 174 title scoring 3 bonus point wins in his 4 matches. Redshirt Freshman Christian Miller (Plainview High School) increased his stock by placing 2nd at 133, losing only to past NCAA Finalist Ethan Lizak of Minnesota. Luke Weber finished 2nd at 157, while Tucker Sjomeling (133), Johnny Blankenship (165), Eric Schultz (197) and Christian Lance (285) each took third place. Peyton Robb and Jake Silverstein tied for 3rd place at 157 as they chose not to wrestle the last match.

University of Nebraska at Kearney
Two Lopers walked away with gold medals from the University of Wyoming Cowboy Open on Saturday, Jarrod Hinrichs and Tyler Cunningham. Hinrichs is a returning All-American from Geneva, Nebraska who captured the 285 pound title. Tyler Cunningham is a true freshman from Gretna, NE who won the 157 pound Amateur division bracket. Nebraska-Kearney had five others place in the top four in the Elite division: J.J. Clark (4th/184 lbs.), Matt Malcom (2nd/157 lbs.), Josh Portillo (3rd/125lbs.), Lincoln native Jonathan Killingsworth (3rd/141 lbs.), Jacob Wasser (4th/149 lbs.), and Gretna senior Brady Radik (4th/197 lbs.).UNK will dual Colorado Mesa and Western State this weekend in Colorado. The rest of the team will be competing at the Grand View Open in Des Moines

Chadron State College
The Eagles opened their season at the Wyoming Cowboy Open. Chance Karst (141) and Wade French (285) took 2nd and 4th respectively in the Elite Division. Karst’s only loss was to 2018 NCAA Qualifier Sam Turner of Wyoming. Former Class A State Champion Brandon Kile from Hastings Senior High finished with a 1-2 record at 133.

The Prairie Wolves opened their season at the 18-team Yellowjacket Open in Rochester, MN. Eron Haynes, formerly of Omaha Central High School and Chadron State College, won the title at 125 pounds with pins in all 4 of his matches. Jared Nickman (past Class A State Champion from Pius X High School) finished 2nd in the 157 weight class. Ben Lodema (past Class C State Champion from Raymond Central High School) finished 5th at 197. True freshman Cody Fielder (Fremont High School) went 2-2 on the day and would’ve wrestled teammate Ryan Smales for 7th place if the tournament would’ve allowed them to.

Midland University (Fremont)
Midland opened the season at the 10th Annual Dan Harris Open in Baldwin City, Kansas that had 165 wrestlers compete in it. Dominique Evans placed second at 165 with a 4-1 record, losing a tight 7-6 decision in the finals. Jonas Gaytan placed 3rd at 133 with 3-1 record, while Stephon Gray placed 3rd at 174 with a 4-1 record. Dalton Mueller (North Bend High School) won 2 matches while Tristan Snover (Seward High School) and Derrell Zagurski (Winnebago High School) both went 1-2.

Michael Stann won 3 of 4 matches to finish 2nd at 285, while Mario Ybarra (Scottsbluff High School) placed 3rd rattling off 4 straight wins after a first round loss.

  1. Would like to know why Dalton Mueller from (North Bend Central) attending Midland University wasn’t listed for his wins at the Dan Harris Open wrestling 165#. Won 2 matches.
